What is a Gulet?

Some of the most exceptionally comfortable ships, the Gulets are wonderfully designed wooden sailing boats that were initially built millenniums ago by the diverse Eastern Mediterranean people who traded their wares along the coastlines.

Origin of the word “Gulet”

The word ‘Gulet’ gave birth to the Spanish ‘Goleta’ and the French ‘Golette’ and the Italian ‘Gulletta’, and it also probably gave birth to the English word ‘Cutter’. There have been some debates amidst academic scholars about where this loanword originated from, but it’s not really important to find where the word came from. Because even today, the Bodrum Gulet is still seen as a work of art.

Structure

The hulls and decks of the Bodrum Gulet are made completely from wood beside the electrical and mechanical parts. The Gulets have evolved over time, and they went from being ‘sailing vessels’ to ‘motor sailors’. This is why many Gulets nowadays possess twin diesel engines that can propel them at the speed of about 8 to 12 knots.

Now, Gulets chiefly sails down the wind and not point into the wind. Usually, there is a broad deck near the ship’s stern with some tables or a large table for the guests to eat their meals. In front of the tables, there is also an awning-covered spacious area for gatherings. Due to the deck and hulls of the Gulet made up of wood, they are exceptionally cool even in the Mediterranean heat. Similarly, in the colder weather, the Gulets remain warm and toasty inside.

The design of the modern Bodrum Gulet is simple. Generally, there is a large master’s cabin near the stern, and there is a long corridor that runs down in the middle of the vessel and has several cabins and staterooms on each side. These Gulets can accommodate from 4 to 8 passengers to a large number of 8 to 36 passengers.
